I love analysing how business procedures work and seeking out their real purpose. Sifting the good from the bad, and then adding clarity to drive any changes, so those involved can work more effectively together. I believe that the art of communication is fundamental to excellence in business practice.
I hold a Bsc. in Materials Science, A TEFL qualification, a Diploma in Computers and Manufacturing and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and am a fellow of the institute of training and occupational learning (FITOL). I am a UK citizen and a native English speaker. I also speak Dutch, French and German. I have acted in and directed plays and I bring the skills from this area into my training.
As a research scientist I worked in the pottery and building industries and also for the Royal Observatory of Belgium. As a research scientist I have had papers published in China, Algeria and Belgium. As a systems analyst I worked on top secret projects for VSEL on the build of submarines. During this period I won the CW Communications Award for systems analysis for my work on configuration-control databases. My later work as a software quality control officer led me to realise that how we communicate with each other is at the heart of our success.
As an educationalist I have taught English as a foreign language in Japan and Belgium. I have also taught science and mathematics at a variety of schools, colleges and other institutions. I went on to found my own company – ROS (Reaching Overseas Scientists) – a company dedicated to working with non-native English speakers to improve their written and oral presentational skills, where I provided communications consultancy and support to a wide range of organisations. I teamed up with Steve Mallaband in 2013 to create Counterpoint.
Following a long and successful career as an international procurement manager, I founded my own consultancy dedicated to building excellence in procurement in the business world. As a consultant I have written about procurement, lectured on procurement, and have provided training and hands-on consultancy to a number of large international clients. I teamed up with Ros Howard in 2013 to create Counterpoint.
I hold a BSc. in Applied Physics and am a fully-qualified Chartered Engineer as well as an affiliate member of CIPS (the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply) and a fellow of the institute of training and occupational learning (FITOL) . I was born in the UK and am a native English speaker, I also speak Dutch, French and German.
I spent the first part of my career as an electrical/electronics engineer specialising in factory automation, working for a variety of companies in the electronics, drinks, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries.
For the following 20 years I worked in procurement where I held senior positions including Vice President of Procurement Development for InBev, the world’s largest brewer, and Head of Contracts and Procurement for the European Southern Observatory. During this time my buying experience was extensive and included packaging materials, vehicles, machinery and technical services, IT hardware and software, professional services (management consultancy, audit, tax, legal etc.), marketing services and outsourcing. I have over 10 years experience of buying in an international environment.
I have negotiated numerous contracts and led negotiation teams to success in some large longer-term deals, including a 5-year can supply contract for a major brewery and a 10-year outsourced IS/IT services contract for a major multinational. I am an expert in the theory of commercial negotiation, and subscribe to the Harvard PON (Program on Negotiation).
